Account Lockouts FAQ

  • Q: How long until the account automatically unlocks?
  • A: Sixty (60) minutes, up from fifteen.
  • Q: "Iforgotmypw.nih.gov" works, but it takes awhile. Is there a faster way to unlock it?
  • A: Go see Paul Graves. He has limited admin rights, and can unlock accounts, which takes effect immediately.
  • Q: ..And if he's not around?
  • A: Call the NIH HelpDesk (301) 496-4357, and put in a service request. It'll get routed to Paul, and/or his backup.
  • Q: Can Anthony, Josh or Shahar get this right?
  • A: We can ask.
  • Q: Why are we getting more account lockouts, as a group?
  • A: Increased security restrictions. The number of bad passwords allowed before the Lock has shrunk (dont have the exact numbers at the moment). Also, users/admins were setting up Services or Shares on servers using their own nih.gov account, and getting tagged when they changed their password. Dedicated Service Accounts can be set up to cope with that problem.
